Choosing a product or solution

To make a choice we usually compare features of different vendors' offerings. There are some common features usually available from the majority of the vendors and some differentiators in addition to them.

If all the vendors have a feature, it should be considered as commodified. Form a list of commodified features to choose a utility product

The differentiating features are to be considered only for strategic tools. The only exception that if the feature is requested in the infrastructural system by an upper-level strategic tool.

There might be many cases to consider a complex solution, which includes several products. In such case, we should disintegrate the solution into a set of commodified building blocks available from many vendors. We should also clearly define the interfaces between the building blocks, what allows replacing any building block to an alternative vendor's solution quickly and easily.
