Now you get an idea, is your organization closer to the sustaining model of doing business, or the disrupting one. Then you could sort your technical systems accordingly:
- Which ones directly bring value to the disrupting aspects of your business model (if any) - we treat such systems as strategic tools
- The rest might support the sustaining aspects of the business model - we approach them as commoditized utilities
The infrastructural systems (those, which serve front-end systems) would be considered as the utilities as well.
After we divided the tech landscape into the two major groups, we have the baseline for any technology related conversation:
- To build the utilities we consider commoditized products and solutions, aiming for cost reduction
- For the strategic tools we should aim for superior functionality
